Play Pens Vs Hutches (Does it matter?)
Rabbits are just about the most wonderful pets you could keep. However, like any other pet, they do come with their certain standard of care which is important to maintain in order to keep them in good health. Which is why in today’s blog I would like to talk to you about correct bunny housing. many new rabbit owners make the innocent mistake of spending lots of money on fancy hutches. Unfortunately, these hutches, though pretty and enticing as they seem to us, will actually do more harm than good to your bunny for the following reasons:
1. It is too small for your bunny. If rabbits do not have enough room to hop around, they become obese and cramped. (Think about it. If you had no room to exercise, you would become unfit and cramped too!)
2. There is not enough room for your rabbit to stretch to their full height. This is a really serious one, as it can lead to spinal issues. I mean, image always having to sit in a chair and never being able to stand up!...Awful, right!?
3. There is not enough room for a proper litter tray. And if your thinking of corner litter trays ...❌! Corner litter trays can be tempting to save on space. However, these litter trays are so small that they build up pee and poo far to quickly! (And believe me, they pee and poo A LOT !!) If not cleaned often enough, they can be breeding grounds for serious bacteria.
So you see, keeping rabbits in hutches is pretty serious business. But of course, if you already have a hutch for your rabbit, you don’t want to throw it out! So what are you going to do? There are a couple of options...
1. Get a pet playpen
Pet playpens are great not only for dogs, but for rabbits, too! I like playpens because they are quick and easy, and they offer a lot of room, giving your rabbit a chance to hop and zoom about as much as they like. However, some playpens can be quite expensive, so purchasing a second hand playpen, which are relatively cheap, could be a good idea
2. Use it as a base
Hutches aren’t good to use as solo cages, but as a home base in a playpen they work great! Fix up the hutch with food and water dishes, hay rack and if there’s an upstairs landing, put in a snuffle mat or soft blanket to snuggle up to when they feel chilly
