How To Litter Train Your Bunny in 4 easy steps
Litter training? You can actually litter train a rabbit? The answer is yes. Not only can rabbits be litter trained, if they are constantly trained, they can never leave a dropping on the floor! (Warning, it might take a long time to get to that standard ! But, it’s not impossible) In fact, for a while, my own two rabbits, Tippy and Susie, where that perfect! It was very hard to get them there, though! However, not all rabbits are going to respond as quickly to litter training as as my own two bunnies did. So today, I am going to be sharing with you how to litter train your rabbit in 4 easy steps. (Note, I cannot estimate how long your bunny may take to learn, as every bunny is different).
1. Litter boxes
I recommend finding a large, cat litter box for your rabbit, preferably big enough for two rabbits. See, rabbits like to move about in their litter trays, so you will probably find a litter tray for the size of one rabbit too small!
2. Put in the poop
Whenever your rabbit leaves a dropping, pick it up and put it in the litter box. This may sound gross, but if you think about it, it’s only pellets and hay! (If it’s too gross, wear gloves). Your bunnies poop shouldn’t be mushy, but hard and about the size of a pea. If it is mushy, your bunny probably did a cecetrope, which is normal and fine (If all the poop is mushy, however, see a vet, as small mushy poop everywhere is not normal for rabbits). When picking up the poop, show the rabbit it’s poo and make sure it’s watching when you put it in the litter box. You don’t have to do this every time, but once or twice is a good idea.
3. Mop it up.
When your rabbit does a pee in the wrong place, do not physically scold him, but mop up the pee and put the pee tissue in his litter box.(Note, only put two tissues should be put in otherwise the litter box will get crowded and yuck).
4. Cleaning it out
When you clean out the litter tray, you should leave in a tiny bit of pee and poo so the rabbit doesn’t get confused and start peeing somewhere else again. However, when the rabbit is fully litter trained, you shouldn’t need to leave old pee and poo in the litter any more.
I really hope this helped you train your bunny! If your rabbit doesn’t get it straight away, don’t get upset at him, because then he will just associate the litter box with you getting upset. Which will not speed up the process at all!
